I. Appearance differences


  1. Cast wheels
    • Appearance characteristics: Usually have a relatively rough surface texture. This is due to the characteristics of the casting process. After demolding, there may be some tiny pores or unevenness on the surface. Its shape is relatively traditional, with relatively round and thick lines. For example, the cast wheels of some ordinary family cars have a simple design without too many complex lines and shapes.
    • Surface treatment: Can be surface-treated in multiple ways, such as painting and electroplating. Painted cast wheels have relatively uniform colors, but the paint may peel off after long-term use; electroplated wheels have a higher gloss and look more beautiful, but if the electroplated layer is damaged, it will affect the appearance.
  2. Forged wheels
    • Appearance characteristics: Forged wheels generally have a more refined appearance. Their surface can be processed very smoothly because the forging process can make metal materials form more tightly. In terms of shape, forged wheels can achieve more complex and sharp line designs. For example, the forged wheels of some high-performance sports cars will have many fine cutting surfaces and unique spoke shapes, making the entire wheel look more sporty and fashionable.

  3. Spun cast wheels
    • Appearance characteristics: It combines some characteristics of casting and forging. The surface quality is better than that of traditional cast wheels and is relatively smooth. At the same time, it can also have a certain degree of complexity in shape. The spoke design can be relatively slender. In appearance, it is between cast and forged wheels. For example, some mid-to-high-end car spun cast wheels will have unique two-tone designs or gradient effects, and improve the appearance texture through different surface treatment processes.


II. Performance differences


  1. Cast wheels
    • Strength and toughness: The material molecular structure of cast wheels is relatively loose, and the strength and toughness are average. When subjected to a large impact force, such as encountering potholed roads or hitting foreign objects at high speed, it is relatively easy to deform. For example, when a vehicle passes through a large pothole at a high speed, the cast wheel may bend and deform, affecting the driving stability of the vehicle.
    • Weight: Cast wheels are usually heavier. This is because of the manufacturing process, and the material utilization rate is relatively low. Heavier wheels will increase the unsprung weight of the vehicle, making the vehicle consume more power when accelerating, decelerating, and steering, affecting the vehicle's handling performance and fuel economy. For example, if an ordinary family car is equipped with heavier cast wheels, it may feel that the vehicle's power response becomes sluggish and fuel consumption will increase to a certain extent.
    • Heat dissipation performance: The heat dissipation performance is relatively poor. Due to its internal structure and material characteristics, heat cannot be well dissipated when the vehicle is driving for a long time or braking frequently. This is a relatively big problem for high-performance vehicles because the braking system will experience thermal fading under high temperatures, affecting braking performance.
  2. Forged wheels
    • Strength and toughness: The strength and toughness of forged wheels are very high. During the forging process, metal materials are processed under huge pressure, and the internal grain structure is more dense, able to withstand higher loads. In extreme cases, such as when a racing car is driving at high speed on the track and frequently braking, accelerating, and turning, forged wheels can better maintain their shape and are not easily deformed, providing more reliable support for the vehicle.
    • Weight: Very light in weight. Due to the high strength characteristics of its materials, the amount of material used can be reduced while ensuring the strength of the wheel. Lightweight wheels can effectively reduce the unsprung weight of the vehicle and make the vehicle's handling more sensitive. For example, using forged wheels on racing cars and high-performance sports cars can significantly improve the vehicle's acceleration performance, braking performance, and steering performance, making the vehicle's response on the track more rapid.
    • Heat dissipation performance: Good heat dissipation performance. The dense structure of forged wheels helps with the rapid conduction and dissipation of heat. When the braking system of a high-performance vehicle is working, it can dissipate the heat generated by braking in time, reducing the risk of brake thermal fading and ensuring the stability of braking performance.
  3. Spun cast wheels
    • Strength and toughness: The strength and toughness of spun cast wheels are better than those of traditional cast wheels. The spinning process makes the rim part of the wheel more compact in material after forming, able to withstand higher stresses than ordinary cast wheels. When encountering some road impacts, it is less likely to deform than cast wheels, but not as good as forged wheels. For example, when some modified car enthusiasts engage in light off-roading or intense driving, spun cast wheels can provide better resistance to deformation than cast wheels.
    • Weight: Lighter than cast wheels but heavier than forged wheels. Through the spinning process, the material thickness can be reduced in part, reducing the overall weight of the wheel, thereby improving the vehicle's handling performance to a certain extent. However, due to its essence still being based on the casting process, it cannot reach the lightweight degree of forged wheels.
    • Heat dissipation performance: The heat dissipation performance is also between cast and forged wheels. The improvement in structure makes heat dissipation better than that of cast wheels, but due to material and process limitations, there is still a certain gap compared to forged wheels. In normal driving conditions, it can better handle the heat generated by braking and the like, but in high-performance driving scenarios, the insufficient heat dissipation performance may gradually become apparent.
